Return to the high country

Tuesday, December 4th, I will fly to the high country.I hope that I do not find these conditions as I've become accustomed to lows of 54 degrees. I have this opportunity to visit my children and grandchildren so I'm going for it.
My friend has found a car for me so I will be driving a 92 Pontiac back to the valley to resell. I like to drive and only hope for roads that are clear and safe.
Randy and Ellen will put me up for a few days and that is a happy household which is a joy to behold and be a part of, if only for a few days.
Ramona will be off on a trip to Michigan on the 5th so at least I'll be able to share a brief moment with her.
My letter to the local paper was published last Tuesday so I was pleased with that.

Thanksgivin2007

The day before thanksgiving I attended Summer's school program at noon and was really impressed with the program especially Summer's class who did a waltz routine the demanded a lot of choreograpy and was very inspiring.
On Thanksgiving day Ethel and I were invited to Brigid's sister Katie's for dinner. It was a wonderful event and I was blessed to be included in the event. I got to met Summer's dog, Jon Jon, and he is delightful.
I had lunch with Dan on Saturday at the Greekfest and told the owner that some of my dearest friends had eaten there last week.
Saturday afternoon and evening Ethel and I spent at the Glendale Glitter where young dancers enterained on their special stage.
Sunday afternoon Ethel and I enjoyed the Rockettes Christmas program at the Dodge Theatre.
that's all for now.

NASA insider-

When she was a high school sophomore, My Granddaughter won a Nasa essay contest and spend some of the summer off of the coast of Florida in an underwater training capsule. Last summer she spent time there also. Consequently she is an e-mail correspondent of Patty Whitson who is currently residing in the space station and also of Clay Anderson who just returned from 6 months in space.
But last week a CU alumni, Scott Carpenter, who was the Mercury commander returned to
Boulder, Colorado for a symposium on space and two CU students were picked to have lunch with him at the event. One of the students was My Granddaughter .She now has his e-mail address also.
Carpenter was from an earlier era but his name is familiar to us older folks. They even named a park in Boulder after him.

Her high school class at Rocky Mountain High School in Fort Collins, Colorado of May 22,2005 chose a quote from the all knowing, Dr. Seuss.

"Oh, the places you will go!
You have brains in your head
You have feet in your shoes
You can steer yourself in any direction you choose."

And those we loved, the lovliest and the best

"And those we loved,
The lovliest and the best
That from his vintage
Rolling time has pressed,
Have drunk their cup a time or two before,
And one by one crept silently off to rest."
-Omar Khayyam
Today would have been Angela's fifty-first birthday

NANCY'S MUSIC HALL-PEORIA-songs we sung

Will The Circle Be Unbroken Melody - Melody -
-
I was standing by my windowOn a cold and cloudy day,When I saw the hearse come rollin'For to take my mother away.
Chorus:Will the circle be unbroken?By and by Lord, by and by,There's a better home a-waitin'In the sky Lord, in the sky. 2. I told the undertaker,"Undertaker, please drive slow,For this body you are haulin'Lord, I hate to see her go."Chorus:
3. Well I followed close behind her,Tried to hold up and be brave,But I could not hide my sorrowWhen they laid her in the graveChorus:
4. I went back home, my home was lonesome, missed my mother she was gone. All my brothers and sisters cryingin our home so sad and alone.Chorus:
5. We sang the songs of childhood, hymns of faith that made us strong,Ones that our mother had taught us,hear the angels sing alongChorus:
6. One by one the seats were empty,One by one they went away,Now my family, they are parted,Will they meet again someday?Chorus:

Some 31 participants wowed the audience with their renditions of the all time favorite gospel and western and folk songs. Nancy pays the bills and we get the thrills.

Some of the voices that we used to cherish are still, Hillary and others, but at Nancy's I'm sure that "The Circle will not be unbroken."

The good old days-songs we sung

STARVING TO DEATH ON MY GOVERNMENT CLAIM (Lane County Bachelor)(Traditional)Richard BooneMy name is Frank Bolar, an old bach'lor I amI'm keeping old batch on an elegant plan,You'll find me out west in the County of LaneStarving to death on my government claim. My house it is built of the national soilThe walls are erected according to Hoyle,The roof has no pitch, but is level and planeAnd I never get wet till it happens to rain. Then hurrah for Lane County, the land of the freeThe home of the bedbug, mosquito and flea,I'll sing loud her praises and never complainWhile starving to death on my government claim. My clothes they are ragged, my language is rough,My head is case-hardened, both solid and tough; The dough it is scattered all aver the roomAnd the floor would take fright at the sight of a broom. My dishes are dirty, and some in the bedAre covered with sorghum and government bread; But I have a good time and I live at my easeOn common-sop sorghum, old bacon and grease. Then hurrah for Lane County, the land of the WestWhere the farmers and laborers are always at rest;Where you've nothing to do but sweetly remainAnd starve like a man on your government claim. How happy am I when I crawl into bedAnd a rattlesnake rattles a tune at my head; And the gay little centipede, void of all fearCrawls over my pillow ind into my ear.And the nice little bedbug, so cheerful and brightKeeps me a-scratching full half of the night,And the gay little flea with toes sharp as a tackPlays "why don't you catch me?" all over my back. But hurrah for Lane County, where blizzards ariseWhere the winds never cease and the flea never dies;Where the sun is so hot if in it you remain,'Twill burn you quite black on your government claim. How happy am I on my government claim,Where I've nothing to lose and nothing to gain;Nothing to eat and nothing to wear,Nothing from nothing is honest and square. But here I am stuck, and here I must stayMy money's all gone, and I can't get away; There's nothing to make a man hard and profaneLike starving to death on a government claim. Then come to Lane County, there's room for you allWhere the winds never cease and the rains never fall.Come join in the chorus, and boast of her fameWhile starving to death on your government claim. Now don't get discouraged, you poor hungry men,We're all here as free as a pig in a pen;Just stick to your homestead and battle your fleasAnd pray to your Maker to send you a breeze. Now a word to claim holders who are bound for to stayYou may chew on your hardtack till you're toothless and gray; But as for me, I'll no longer remainAnd starve like a dog on my government claim. Then farewell to Lane County, farewell to the WestI'll travel back East to the girl I love best;I'll stop in Missouri and get me a wifeAnd live on corn dodgers the rest of my life.

letter to the editor

Sir:

Your Speak Out column always caters to the negative comments by people who do not wish to be identified and I've noticed letters before bemoaning this fact and you defend their right to be spineless. I know that one more letter would likewise be ignored.

The Fort Collins Coloradoan has a column called "Thumbs Up " in which positive comments come in and are published. I will share one of many comment from the October 20th edition.

" Thumbs up to all the Colorado public defenders and defense attorneys, especially Maria Liu, David Wymore, Naathan Chambers and Kathryn Hay. You make us very, very proud of your commitment to fairness, truth, justice and courage. God bless you, indeed.!"
Carol Davy, Laporate

Maybe a column in your newspaper that put emphasis on the positive would be beneficial as there is vast pool of people out here who feel very good about their lives in this community.

Maybe the nationwide trend of decline in newspaper circulation would be stemmed and maybe some vent writers would see a great day in the morning.

The goat is missing

I feel rather sheepish about posting this picture for I thought that Gus our goat would be somewhere in sight. He is not. I received Gus as a birthday present from my wife, Donna, and the goat always believed that he was human. So whether a tri-color collie or a goat pulls the child's cart, it is a hoot"""

The missing goat

Try as I may I couldn't find a picture of Gus the goat. I received Gus as a birthday present from my wife and he became a family favorite. I feel rather sheepish about placing this photo to honor your goat of long ago.

Summer Sunshine gets a dog

I hope to see Summer's new friend on Saturday. When I recieve a photo of her new friend I will share it with you on this blog.

In honor of her new friend I have posted pictures of our old friends earlier today.

"Old dog Tray's ever faithful;
Grief cannot drive him away;
He's gentle, he is kind,
I'll never, never find
A better friend than old dog Tray."
