Jim Entenman and family

The picture was taken at 1921 Blue Mesa Dr. in Loveland, Colorado. It had to be in the mid 80's as Ramona looks to be about 14 years old. Left to right, Donna, Ramona, Glenn, Audra,Jim, Sandy. Front row, Tanya.

Aunt Sophia Enenman Morgan.

It looks as if Donna was in high school and Sophia was her favorrite person and guiding light. Sophia was also one of the favorites of our children. A great lady.
I have found some other pictures that I will share at my next posting.

Donna and sister Carolilne, the 80's

I do not have the exact year, but the picture is taken in Phoenix

Johnnie and Bev Entenman, 1950

Donna's brother,John and wife, Bev, in 1950.This would be about five years before I came into the family.

The Grandparents and johnnie's children

I did find another photo and I believe the children from right to left are Mary, Jim,Jeff and Lonnie.

Our children's grandparents,continued

Pictured holding Johnnie,s boy, I believe to be Jim, is Donna's father, John Entenman.Behind John is Donna's Mother, Nora. To the right is Johnnie's wife, Beverly.

John and Nora Entenman had the following children: Nora, Caroline, Johnnie,Donna and Jim. Nora and Johnnie are deceased as well as both grandparents. In fact , the children of Donna Entenman and Glenn Rye did not have the priviledge of knowing either of their granddads. The were able to enjoy the privilege of knowning grandma Entenman and grandma Rye.
I did not have acess to other photos but will share them if I am able to put them on he library that our Grandson, Courr Rye, provided for this site.
I trust that Donna will provide some historical background on her family as she had compiled for the Thompson family.

Emma Thompson Rye's siblings

Pictured from left to right is my Mother, Emma Thompson Rye, Bertha Thompson,Albert"s wife, Albert and Nels Thompson.the date of the picture is unknown.

Just received a call from Sandy Rye in Eau Claire, Wisc. and my brother,Ray, has been transferred to the critical unit at the hospital. He has pneumia and is a recent recipient of the valve from a pig's heart from which he recovered nicely. He also has a defibrilator, the third of which he has had, two others were recalled. Our prayers are with Sandy and her family.

Our wonderful neice, Susan Nerison Olson, is recovering from cancer related illnesses at her home in Madison, Mn. Many years ago she was a house Mother for special needs children in a Dutch community in N.W.Iowa. she had all of the responsibilties including shoveling the snow from the drive and walks. She would take some of her charges to the Nerison farm in Hills where Bob took special atttention to them and it was with a heavy heart when they had to leave that caring atmosphere and return to the home.

Roberta, Valerie and Susan are the loving and wonderful daughters of my sister,Beverly Rye Nerison and Bob Nerison. They are very dear to our hearts.
They are the grandchildren of Gullik Nelson Rye and Emma Thompson Rye

R

This coming Sunday would mark the 90th wedding anniversary of my Mother Emma Thompson and GN Rye. They were married at Porter, Mn. where they became engaged in farming. Now, for a brief history of the Thompsons as researched by Donna Entenman Rye.

Emma's parents were Olena Olson, born on April l,l862 in the old Dakota territory near Yankton, S. Dak. She married Ole Thompson. Ole was born on August 21st, l857, in Slidre,Norway. The were married in 1882 in Canton,S.Dak.he passed on january 26th,l926 she passed on Memorial day in 1955.

The family remembers Grandma Thompson telling stories of how when she was nine years old, taking care of children at a farm near Vermillion,S,Dak, where indians raided and killed the family at a nearby farm.
Emma's Mothers father was Nels olson, born in Oslo, Norway. He came to the US and lived for a time in Wisconsin before moving to Yankton, S.Dak.

Emma's brothers were Albert, Tollef,Nels and Otto Leonard. Two sisters, Mary Anderson was Keith Anderson's Grandmother and Kristi Wang's great grandmother. The Andersons are referenced in previous blogs and Kristi is a friend of our Dan and Brigid and Summer Rye in Phoenix.the other sister was Nettie who became a Bly.
Tollef Thompson married a daughter Elaine married mike Arms. They lived in Ohio
Nels never married. He lived and farmed at Valley Springs, S.Dak.Grandma Thompson lived with Nel after her husband died also living for a time with Emma Rye and Nettie Bly.
She was a special lady who was bed ridden for some time. She would lay in bed and sing hymns. She had a good sense of humor and was very observant. Vivian Rye Helgeson, as an eary teenager tried to hide some purple finger nail polish from her but she saw it. Glenn teased her with a fake ring and when she asked him about the ring it had a water bulb inside his hand and he sprayed water on her. She enjoyed practical jokes. She is buried in Valley Springs, S.Dak.
Nels died of a ruptured appendix at the Luverne, Mn. hospital. he was such a quiet man and never complained.
In his will he donated his free and clear 160 acre farm to the Tuff Home in Hills, Mn. and there is a plague there honoring him.

Otto is featured in other entries earlier on this blog and became a favorite of Glenn and Donna's children in California.
The other brothers and Nettie also had fairly large families.

99 years ago today,Maarch 22, 1907, from the diary of GN.Rye

At the day of this recording in my Father's diary, Gullik Nelson Rye, had been in the USA for 2 years. He was 18 years old. God willing, I will share excerpts from his diary through December 31, l907.

Gullik Nelson Rye, on the right in this sporty buggy, here with his brother, Peter, was about 25 years old when this picture was taken near Hills, Mn.

I must credit the following people for making this endeavor, Glendeavor, a reality.

My Grandson, Court Rye, son of Randy Rye, provided the expertise and gracious portion of his time to make this web site blog and picture library possible.Court will graduate from his Father's and Dan's school, the U. of Colorado at Boulder on May 12th of this year.
Court is the great grandson of GN Rye, pictured above. His personal web site is HTTP://courtrye.com/
He is referenced on this bog on the following dates: March 21, 2005; July 27, 2005; July 29, 2005; December 7, 2005; August 7,2005; December 5, 2005; Febuary 8, 2006.

Eldora Rye Bakk,Mother of Barbara,Steven,Jim and Lori Bakk

Eldora is sitting on her Mother, Emma's lap.Opal is to the left, I,Glenn, am on my Fathers knee and brother Norris is to the right.I look to be about three years old so this picture was proababy taken in 1930.

Eldora was married to Orville
Bakk during the early days of WW2.
Last summer I stopped in Lincoln, Neb. to visit the families of Barbara Eisenbraun and Jim Bakk.I remarked in passing that when I was a lad ,I used to read the dairies of our father, Gullik Nelson Rye. We had lost track of them and as I shared with Barbara she said that each of her brothers and sisters had a copy. As I was working on my blog last month I called Barbara and asked if she could make a copy of one of the books for use on my blog. She got a hold of her brother, Steven, in Texas and last week I recieved the original in the mail from Steve. Thank you,Steve.
The first entry in the dairy was made on March 22, 1907. Next week that will be exactly 99 years ago to the day.I believe that at that time he was 18 years old and had been in the country two years and was already writting in English, His first language was Norwegian.
When our Father died in 1944, our neighbor, Richard Johnson told how the 16 year old immigrant entered thier first grade class for a few months during the winter when farm work was scarce. He was quickly moved to higher grades as his language skills improved. I do not believe that he graduated from 8th grade but there was no trace of a foreign accent in his speech as there was in his brother, Peter's speech throughout his life.
I have asked Margaret Bakk Thornton , a first cousin of Orville Bakk and Frances Bakk, an aunt of the children of Orville Bakk and my sister, Eldora,to share some anecdotal and recorded history of Orville Bakk and his family with me for use on this blog.

This will be my token of gratitude to Barbara, Steve, Jim and Lori, the children of Eldora Rye Bakk and Orville Bakk.

Excerpts from our Father' diary will commence on March 22nd,the 99th year anniversary of their recordation.

Kristi's baby shower

Summer and Brigid hosted the party at their home in Phoenix.Kristi, on the left, about 20 years ago, is the wife of Mike Wang
,f-22 pilot and SW Airline pilot. They have been friends of Dan and Brigid for years and also cousins.
What a remarlable collection of intertwinging events.
Beth, in the front row right is the wife of Stefan Kneuss, a creator of artificial limbs and will be featured one the the next Monday nights on an ABC program, The Miracle Workers. But last year as Randy's daughter, My Granddaughter was looking at colleges Randy told Dan that she was interested in Cal Tech.Dan told Kristi;Kristi told Beth and Beth lined My Granddaughter up with a telephone converstaion with her father in law, a Cal Tech faculty member. My Granddaughter is happily enrolled at the University of Colorado but such loving concern by relatives moved her and all of us.
Keith and Lois just returned from a trip to Israel where he took a group from his church.
After lunch with the men at a Greek cafe I returned to Brigid's house with Dan and I met young Keith's wife. Young Keith is a friend of our Greg.
I also met Mike's sister,Jennifer, whose husband is a AF pilot stationed at El segundo and they live at Ft. McArthur in San Pedro where I was stationed when President Truman dropped the A bomb and ended WWll.
Keith's Mother, Elsie Swanson has a sister named Doris Swanson Skillman. Her son, Rodney, was at the men's lunch. We knew many Valley
Springss , SD people. He shared that he had lived in Mankato, Mn. and it turns out the my nephew, Dr. Roger Nelson,DVM, put down their golden retriever for them 7 years ago at his Mankato clinic.
What a blessing to see and be reminded of all the many ways thisfamily has touched and blessed our families.
I am, among all men, most richly blessed.

Kristi's baby shower by Brigid & Summer

On March 4th Summer and Brigid hosted a baby shower for Kiristi Anderson Waan.I will now post a picture of the Anderson family in years gone by and then continue the saga of the interelations of the two families.

Newhew Gary Rye, An American patroit

Gary, 2nd from right, behind Gradma Rye, was featured in the Gillette, Wy, newspaper of 02/03/o6. You should be able to access it on the internet. It shows Gary, age 56, sounding taps as his drill group honors the passing of one of America's heroes who served their country. I believe th bugle is one that uncle Tommy had and I gave it to Gary at Tommy's passing. Most places in America the taps is sounded as a recording, but in Gillette because of Gary's devotion to God and country it is sounded live.
The last time I heard Gary pay tribute to a veteran was at his cousin, Duane Nelson's funeral in Hills, Mn.
At my passing, I hope that I am honored by his loving tribute.

Roger Nelson, DVM.The rebel years

Rebel years, just kidding, but Roger was mentioned in the last blog concerning the turkey day parade in Worthington, mn. so I thought that it would be a good time to bring in Roger's and Art's episode with Randy's 1931 Model A five window coupe with the rumble seat.
I purchase the model a when
Randy was five in about 1962 at Orv's station in Hills, Mn. It was stored in Grandma Rye's garage in Hills and later on the farm that Duane was renting. Roger called me in California and asked if he and Art could drive the Model A in a parade in Hills. Of course, I agreed.
Art and Roger had some trouble in getting it started so they called in Art's dad, a former rural mail carrier who rebuilt a model T with catapillar tracks so as never to miss a snow date. Well, alleged, Art or Roger suggested calling a mechanic from town. Now there was never a mechanic who knew more about model a's than Art's dad.
Maybe his feelings were hurt cause he fixed it out of their prescense and then after a week or so of pointing where the trouble was he shared the solution with them. Mice had built a nest in the muffler and the car would start and then would shut off because of the block off of compression.
This picture was taken in May of 1966. Some cool dude, what do you say?
