To Dan-happy birthday, again
Desiderata
Max Ehrmann, Copyright 1952.
Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible without surrenderbe on good terms with all persons.Speak your truth quietly and clearly;and listen to others, even the dull and the ignorant;they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter;for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.
Keep interested in your own career, however humble;it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.Exercise caution in your business affairs;for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is;many persons strive for high ideals;and everywhere life is full of heroism.
Be yourself.Especially, do not feign affection.Neither be cynical about love;for in the face of all aridity and disenchantmentit is as perennial as the grass.
Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth.Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.Beyond a wholesome discipline,be gentle with yourself.
You are a child of the universe,no less than the trees and the stars;you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you,no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.
Therefore be at peace with God,whatever you conceive Him to be,and whatever your labors and aspirations,in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul.
With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams,it is still a beautiful world.Be cheerful.Strive to be happy.

Prelude to a birthday-Dan's-8
Dan, the subject of this story ,is shown in the arms of his Mother, Donna. The picture was developed in December of 1958 so he was under 6 months of age.Pictured with him are Angela, Randy and yours truly and a very special lady friend of my Mother, Caroline Leeland.
She was a friend of my parents when they lived in the Porter, Minnesota area.
I had been teaching at Worthington Senior High school when we decided to move to California. Donna was severa months pregnant with Dan and Caroline offered to go along to California in order to help Donna with the children and to visit some of her relatives. We paid her expenses and a bus ticket back to Minnesota. She was like one of the family, so now, seven years later as we left Southern Minnesota we journeyed North to Fargo where we could touch base one again with our dear friend.
We then went North to Winnipeg, Canada where we picked up the trans Canadian highway and turned West.
Near Calgary we visited a farm where they were actually threshing wheat with a great big old 1903 steam engine tractor where we observed big chains from the from wheels to a drum like device on the tractor. It was then that we discovered that power steering wasn't a new invention on our Chrsyler but was needed in 1903 to steer a monster tractor.
Near Baniff we stayed at a roadside park and the children were most amused when the bears enjoyed Greg's disposable diapers that we had deposited in the trash can.
We took the ferry boat to Victoria, British Columbia where we visited the Boutchard Gardens and where we came upon a bus driver who was the spitting image of our Riverside IBM friend, Owen Craig. At I campground site I bumped into a fellow camper who taught in the Riveside Schools when I did.
We then saw the space needle in Seattle and traveled down the coast to our home in Riverside, California.
We were gone from our home for most of June and most of July.
ON THE 12TH OF JULY WE FORGOT TO CELBRATE THE BIRTHDAY OF
DANIEL GENE RYE.
So we won't forget this year and Dan, Brigid and Summer are up in the area we explored so many years ago. They left Victoria, B.C. on their power boat, Sunshine, earlier this month. Summer's friend, Claire, has been with her last week.
On Saturday, July 12th, the picture of the birthday boy and his family will be published on this site.

Prelude to a birthday-Dan's-6
Donna's friend, Phyllis Pope of Riverside, California painted this picture of the Rye family farm home. She was also Randy's art teacher for a few years with great results.
Angela, Randy, Dan and Greg (6 months old) were treated like royalty by their cousins, the Helgesons, the Nerisons, the Norris Rye's, the Nelsons-by everyone.
My brother in law, Elmer Nelson, a most serious Swedish farmer allowed Dan to cultivate few rows of corn with Dan sitting in his lap on the big John Deere tractor but as soon as a hill or two was plowed up, the party was over
The picture now hangs in the home of Vivian Rye Helgeson in Bemidji, Minnesota and I got to see it again last month.

Prelude to a birthday-dan's-3
Katy and Cinimin bid me goodbye as we hook up to our 27 foot Terry camper which had this inscription on the back bumper.-THE RAMBLING RYE'S OF RIVERSIDE-
We camp overinght near the river at Needles-it was hot'.We traveled to Tucson where we camped in the parking lot of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church where Donna and I were members when I taught in Roskrudge Junior High School.
We attended sevices at the church and it was the first time that I heard the hymn."The Stranger of Galilee" While we lunched in Flagstaff, a mother with three small children went by chewing them out every way but up and we all chuckled. We found shelter in Sante Fe at the police station parking lot as we endured a great hail storm. When your in a camper you really realize what a hail storm is. We camped in the drive of my college roomate, Robert Exon, who at the time was a pharmacist at the Va Hospital in Witchita, Kansas. Greg took seriously ill and was hospitalised for a day or so. Donna caught his agony early on and we rushed him to the hospital. Our destination was Minnesota where we visited my Mother and staying in her drive as well as with the Helgeson's on the farm.

Dr.Greg-DCM
Caregiver Greg in his Loveland, Colorado office where he adminsters chiropractic and acupuncture solutions to natrual healing.
His sincerity and concern for the patient has endeared him to all of his followers.
When I visit his office and am waiting to go to lunch with him and when the I'm introduced as his father, they have unsolicited words of praise and admiration for Greg ,spoken from the heart.
Of course, his family has know for years of his love and compassion.
"Who gives himself with his gift feeds three
Himself, his hungering neighbor and THEE.
Ramona's new family member, Madison
It's quite obvious that I don't know how to use the computer to turn the picture but Ramona and Madison are great no matter what the angle of the photo.
Madison is of Angolian (Turkey) and Pyrenenes- Spain and France stock and I'm speculating that this breed could have been used by the Basque sheepherders in Spain.
Ramona drove to Oklahoma to pick up Madison and also transported Madison's sibling to a new owner in Denver.
Ramona recently completed her tenure as charge nurse in the emergency ward of the Loveland trauma center that serves Colorado,Nebraska and Wyoming.
She has been appointed as the new director of education at the hospital and will train people for the various tasks that will come their way. I'm sure that workshops and continuing education is under that umbrella.
She is always ready to take off with Madison to Fort Collins and meet up with Ellen and Randy at their home and with the dogs in tow they run and walk the trails and open space adjoining Ellen and Randy's home.
I had better not fail to mention ever faithful Ginger, in the front row.
Several years ago when I visited Ramona in New Baltimore, Michigan. Ginger was fiestier and younger and she was competing for our attention against two of Ramona's other two dogs, Smokie and I forget the other name. So Ginger went over to the open front door and barked as if guests were arriving. Of course, the other two dogs raced to the front door and Ginger slyly returned to command our full attention. Really, it was uncanny.
Ramona's return to Colorado has been marked with joy and happiness for all of us who love and adore her. Sam and Ben hang on her every word.

Springtime in the Rockies-Sam and Ben
Sam,(7) and Ben,(4) enjoy the drinks served on Randy's deck. They are the children of Lisa and Greg Rye.
Later in the day Randy offered the boys the option of taking a nap or flying a model airplane which they all assembled. After some thought the boys opted for the model plane. For four dollars Randy had obtained a plane the would fly three minutes after being charged for 10 seconds by a little battery that was inlcuded. After two or three flights it lodged in a tree but Randy had a long branch trimmer and the right boys were back in the air.
Sam and Ben had recently flown to Seattle and on a float plane to British Columbia and it wasn't long before Sam had two sticks in his hand and was directing the plane into the hanger after landing.
It was hot and humid and I searched out a park bench in the shade to witness the lift offs.

Springtime in the Rockies-Randy
Randy's office is in his home but with his ear phone he rambles around the adjoining city, county and state parks that joins his propery (upwards of 800 acres of open space) and holds conferences with his colleagues who are scattered around the world as they deal with financial goals of the moment.
In the distance are the Rockies and right over the ridge is the Horsetooth Reservoir that seems to go on forever and is usually populated with water craft and fishermen. It takes it name from a rock formtion that resembles a horsetooth and was so named by early settlers as the approached the mountains.
The settlers were used to the mountains in the East and legend has it that as they approached the Rockies they thought that they were only a day or so out- but over three weeks later they still hadn't reached the majestic Rockies.
Randy's colleagues are probable in 8 x 10 cubicles and commute hours to work
From his deck I have seen eagles, deer and human beings on the bike, horse trails, ballfields, ect. that dot the open area.
Randy has a ear of corn dangling on a spring dangling from a willow tree that squirrels junp up and grab and hang unto until the freed a kernel or two for their lunch.Ellen and Randy's two beautiful dogs keep a sharp eye on the squirrels and occassionally chase them away but it is a joy to watch.
Ellen is the public relations director for the Poudre school district(some 25,ooo students) and this week will be attending a conference in D..C.
Ellen is an avid tennis player and recently competed in a state final match where she was the runner up. When she's not playing tennis she's running the trails behind their home.
Ramona brings her dog, Madison, over and the three of them often run together with the dogs.
